Breath Test Sniffs Out Lung Cancer
."Use of the test for patients who have positive CT scans might help reduce the unnecessary biopsies and costs associated with false-positive scans."
As previously reported, the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) showed a 20% reduction in lung cancer mortality among high-risk patients screened for three consecutive years with CT as compared with chest x-rays.
Overall, 24% of NLST participants had at least one positive screening image, including 39% of patients in the CT arm. In 96% of cases, positive CT results led to benign findings, usually on biopsy, as did 95% of the positive x-rays.
Reducing the high false-positive rate with chest CT could make lung cancer more efficient and substantially lower the cost of screening by eliminating unnecessary follow-up procedures and tests, said Peled.
Exhaled compounds have been linked to a variety of medical conditions over the years. Moreover, studies going back almost a decade have shown that lung cancer cells produce specific patterns (signatures) of VOCs.
